ANITA CYR - PHOTOGRAPHER (1922-2005)

DISCOVERING THE SOUL...

My mother Anita Cyr (1922-2005) was an amateur photographer with an artistic flair and a love of making pictures.

She was even a forerunner of the modern Photoshop era, adding hair in black pencil to some of the people she photographed, including my father...

The technique was not unique, as several photographers of the time practiced it, and the famous Yousuf Karsh had an assistant whose exclusive job was to paint the negatives to eliminate any defects that might have made the photo less pleasing to the eye...

My mother was fundamentally an artist, and she loved to create paper collages in addition to photography.

If you look at her hand, you'll see that she had great elegance and precision in her writing.

What's more, my mother spoke both French and English because of her friends from New Richmond, which is an anglophone village.

Every year between 1940 and 1976, my mother photographed her family on the Gaspé Peninsula, first with a KODAK Brownie 620, then with Kodak Instamatic cameras.

My mother inspired my career as a journalist and photographer.

I'd like to thank her and pay tribute to her by publishing here some of her photographs that have stood the test of time.

Here are a few photos she took.
